Internationally acclaimed sculptor Fen de Villiers is bringing his first public work in the US to Greenville. “The Sower” — an original 7-foot-tall bronze sculpture — will soon take shape in the heart of Biltmore Walk.

Behind the Design

Known for his fine art sculptures in bronze and stone, de Villiers brings a refined, classical aesthetic to the project. The concept, which was recently revealed at Artisphere, is rooted in early modernist movements and inspired by American Art Deco.

The Belgium-based sculptor created “The Sower” as a symbol of progress — both for Greenville’s continued growth and a broader sense of optimism in American culture.

“The figure gazes forward while casting seeds, striding with grace and confidence,” de Villiers said. “My intention is to anchor this optimistic, future-oriented vision in bronze, allowing it to withstand the test of time and continue to shine brightly for many decades to come.”

A Setting for a Landmark

“The Sower” reflects the broader vision of Biltmore Walk — a luxurious townhome community under construction on the corner of Biltmore Drive and Pearl Avenue. Inspired by the timeless elegance of New York’s Gramercy Park, the refined community blends timeless architecture with walkable green space and intentional design.

The sculpture’s conceptual sketches were recently approved by the Greenville Arts in Public Places Commission. Read: The piece officially has the green light to be cast and permanently installed in the community’s public plaza. It’s going to be a show-stopper.
